of Mercury, the band behind one of our favorite songs: “Fools” from the “Gaya Sa Pelikula” official soundtrack dropped their new EP – CHANGIN’ Volume 2 under Sony Music Philippines. Following the momentum from the recent release of their collaboration with Chinese-breakthrough producer Crazy Donkey called “New Highs,” the trio is excited for their fans to listen to their new experimental sound.
To rouse excitement around the release of of Mercury’s EP and promote the skate-themed music video for “New Highs”, a pop-up skate and music gig was hosted by the band at Chibz Resto bar in Intramuros Manila last April 27, 2022. The street in front of the resto-bar was temporarily closed off with numerous skating ramps and railings set up for the skaters to enjoy. All afternoon, skaters of all ages were rolling through the streets, going off-ramps, and sliding through railings as the DJ played numerous OPM hip-hop songs on speaker.
The skaters also competed against each other in a series of contests to show off different skating tricks like Best Trick, Highest Ollie, and Longest Ollie. Aside from cash prizes and free t-shirts, the winners also get to be featured as the track cover for the “New Highs” song across all streaming platforms.
By nighttime, there was a line-up of performances from a couple of up-and-coming artists including electronic producer, Zelijah and rising hip-hop artists Young Cocoa, and Malli.
of Mercury ended the night by giving the attendees a taste of their new music and a throwback to a couple of their old songs we fell in love with. It was the band’s first outdoor street gig. It was also their first time playing live in a long time because of the quarantine. Nonetheless, they were able to kill their performances giving us all kinds of energy from their diverse lineup of songs.
During the round-table interview with of Mercury where we were able to personally ask questions about the new EP, they warned the fans to “expect the unexpected”. CHANGIN’ Vol 2 which features 3 tracks: “STRESSES”, “ENERGY” and “CHOLULA (Cut You Loose) will be very different from the band’s past discography. Their old songs heavily featured the guitar while the new ones are totally experimental with a mix of electro-pop, retro-modern grooves, and laid-back funk. All three songs in the EP are different from each other as the band wanted to explore elements they haven’t tried before.
The band shared that they spent 1 month in quarantine together and the EP was a product of closely playing music with each other. “We wanted to discover what else we can do. The three of us are each totally different people and we jumbled everything together into the songs in the EP”. The band wanted to unlock more of themselves and incorporate the journey in the songwriting process. This EP was a step outside of their comfort zone and they were able to come up with sounds they didn’t realize they were capable of. CHANGIN’ Vol 2 is a testament to the band’s versatility, sense of adventure, and embracing of diversity in music.
It’s been a long time and of Mercury is glad to be back. They are quite unsure what the response will be about their new songs from the listeners, especially their old fans but they’re glad to have the songs out on streaming platforms for the world to hear.
You can listen to CHANGIN’ Vol. 2 by of Mercury on Spotify and also watch the skating-themed music video for “New Highs” on Youtube.
