Falling in Gay Love with Korean BLs

I’ve been obsessed with Korean Dramas since I was in college which was back in 2017. Korea takes its dramas or series to a cinematic level. Everything about most of the dramas that they produce was close to perfection and like you guys, I also loved the slow burn. There’s nothing like the intensity of two characters staring into each other’s eyes with longing as the theme song plays in the background. They drag us through each episode without having two characters kiss and we love them for it!

But to be honest, I stopped watching Kdramas altogether and it’s been about 4 years now. Since 2017, I haven’t committed to finishing a Kdrama because I fell out of love with it. I grew tired of the same old perfect stories and felt like they were just not close to reality anymore. The main thing that Kdramas at the time lacked were queer or LGBTQIA+ representation. There was a disconnect and I was no longer thrilled watching the romance of two surgically-perfect heterosexual human beings.  As a gay man living in our modern times, I yearn for stories I could identify and relate with.

That is why I felt so happy that Korea started producing their own BLs of the same quality as their regular dramas. It warms my heart to see Korean actors portray queer roles and tell stories that our community relates to. Yes, we need longer and more dimensional stories than the Korean Boys Love Series we’ve seen so far. It doesn’t worry me though. The boys love genre is new. The existence of BL and the growing community of people who support it is a great milestone in itself. Like Thai or Pinoy BLs that we’ve got so far, I’m sure the BLs that get produced, the better. The more diverse stories we get, the more people’s lives are being seen and I’m excited to devour any new BL that Korea has coming out next!
