S2E05: Are Movies and Series Today Really Getting Worse? with JM Cruz from Zero Hour Discussions

There are certain movies and series we watched growing up that hugely impacted our lives. They were a source of comfort and entertainment on the days when we just wanted to escape our own lives. They taught us valuable lessons and helped shape our judgment as we age. We are all entitled to our own opinions, but what would you say if someone told you that your favorite movie was bad?
We are joined by digital media junkie and critic, JM Cruz the host of Zero Hour Discussions who shared his own perspective and strong opinions about the quality of Hollywood movies and series being released these days. JM shared how he grew up loving these types of media and how we’ve been going downhill for a very long time. I personally learned a lot from hearing JM talk not only about movies but also about his personal life.
We are all entitled to our own opinions so come on. Let’s sit down and discuss.

  1. I love Suits! It’s interesting to know that JM sees it as something that helped shaped his perspective, while I saw it more for its entertainment value.

Anyway, yes, the quality and standards have long declined — but I think media tends to serve what the market demands. So it’s really a two-way thing.

  2. For me there are some series and movies that is better before. But still there’s a lot of amazing and awesome movies and series these days!

  3. I definitely love movies. They are a big part of my life growing up. I don’t think they’re getting worse. It’s just easy nowadays to voice our opinions on social media. The latest ones I see are the marvel series.

  4. I don’t really think they’re getting worse. I just think social media has made it much easier for people to share their opinions. Over the years, I’ve seen a ton of stinkers and a ton of great ones.

  5. I really think it depends on the movie. Some movies I think are great but then there are some newer movies that I’m thinking… really?? I expected more.

  6. for me it depends on what genre. When I was younger it was One Tree Hill, Dawson’s Creek, 90210, Charmed, Gilmore Girls etc, leveled up to Gossip Girls and the new 90210, then Pretty Little Liars… Parenthood and This is Us. I must say, mahilig ako sa family oriented series and it keeps getting better. This is Us pa lang that just ended its series, ang puso ko eh. epi by epi talaga tugs a heart string. So i guess its in the genre din talaga. kasi madami ding ngangabels. Sa pinoy now, i really love 2 good 2 be true ng kathniel.

    1. I totally agree with you! I am still watching those old TV Series that I haven’t watched years back and I still find them entertaining. Although I noticed that many new TV series nowadays are not my vibe and find it toxic.
I was shocked when I watched the latest version of Gossip Girl, and OMG I only finished it for the sake of learning the Gen Z culture and fashion! The original Gossip Girl series is still better.

  7. I am sure many will say it depends on the audience but I think when it comes to local ones, yes, its getting worse, lol, but when it comes to international ones.. they are really getting better. minsan pera pera na lang talaga dito sa atin.
