Free Writing as a form of journaling is dumping all of your thoughts, writing them all down in a diary or a journal. Whether it be a physical journal, or a diary app on your phone, having an outlet to pour your thoughts and feelings into will be very beneficial for your mental health.

You shouldn’t crowd your brain with too many thoughts running at the same time. You also shouldn’t ignore or bottle up your feelings because they will eventually consume you and affect other parts of your life. These thoughts and feelings need somewhere to go. You have to get them out of your system on a regular basis. Unburden yourself from all the worries and clear your mind by freely writing everything down in a journal without any self-judgment.
I’ve written a couple of blogs talking about why you should start a journal, especially during quarantine, and how journaling has made a huge impact on my journey to self-discovery. For this blog though, I wanted to give you guys a bit of a boost to help you get your healthy journaling habit started!
Do not be intimidated by the idea of daily journaling because you don’t even need to be good at writing to have a journal. If you have no idea where to start or what to write about in your journal, try and shift your mindset. You don’t need to think about what to write about. You need to write about what you’re thinking instead. Free writing is all about opening yourself up to allow your thoughts to flow from brain to paper.
You can do this and I’ve just got some journaling ideas to help you out. Here are some Free Writing Prompts for Venting or Clearing Your Head to help you get started!
Free Writing Prompts for Venting or Clearing Your Head
Simply use any of these phrases and continue writing from there…
For venting:

Here are some phrases you can use when your head is about to explode, and you need to get things out of your system. Flush out toxic thoughts and don’t be afraid to go into all of the sordid details about why you’re feeling frustrated or in a sort of way. You also don’t need to make any sense at all, just go on and rant it all out.
- Here’s everything that went down…
- I cannot believe this happened…
- I shouldn’t have….
- Something happened today that made me feel…
- Everything sucks because….
- Life would be so much easier if…
- If things went my way for once…
- If only I could turn back time…
- If only I was brave enough…
- In a perfect world, I would…
The important thing is for you to be completely honest, even if you don’t like the things that are coming out of your mind. These are the things you need to say, but nobody actually needs to hear. Do not judge yourself because we are all human. This practice just helps you become more self-aware of how you perceive things that happen in your life and could also serve as a starting point for things you can work on for yourself in the future.
For worries or clearing your head:

The next phrases are primarily when you’re feeling burdened by worries or feeling hopeless about things that are out of your control. Overthinkers like me sometimes feel paralyzed by these thoughts, preventing us from seeing past the challenges. Hopefully, these phrases will help pinpoint our fears, settle down our anxieties, and also assists us in becoming more action-driven in overcoming struggles and difficulties.
- The one thing I cannot stop thinking about is…
- These are all of the things that could go wrong…
- I’m afraid that if things don’t get any better…
- The only way out of this is…
- I don’t know what to do, but I will…
- Here are all of my options…
- Here’s what I can do now…
- The next thing to do now is….
- I could turn things around by…
- I will do better by…
For good days:

There are good days and it is important to document these good days down in your journal as well. Let’s hold on to happy memories and practice gratitude every day. Life sucks most of the time, but there are still a couple of little things we can appreciate by continuing to live our lives.
- Things might be bad right now, but here are the things I’m grateful for…
- There are better days to come like…
- Things will be alright because…
- I’m proud of myself today because…
- The most exciting thing that happened today was…
- The brand new thing I learned today is…
- I can’t wait until…
- Here’s a memory I want to keep for the rest of my life…
- Here are the small things I accomplished today…
- I appreciate how…
