Written by Marga Mingoa

The pandemic has taught us many things and has definitely pushed our limits. More than 5 months have passed and you’ve most likely spent a decent (or maybe even excessive) amount on social media, Netflix, Amazon Prime, Youtube, and the likes or maybe you’ve been able to redecorate your living space and/or start your very own garden. Well, it’s time to try something new and support local and what better way to do it than to attend the Linggo ng Musikang Pilipino (LMP)!

The National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), PhilPop Music Foundation, Organisasyon ng Pilipinong Mang-aawit (OPM), and Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA) has been having the annual LMP celebration for six years. It usually takes place in July but, the pandemic has caused all sorts of delays or even cancellations for a great number of major events. Rest assured, this situation is only a bump in the road that won’t stop us from celebrating our love for music and culture. In fact, LMP has taken it a step further by hosting the Philippines’ first-ever online music festival in efforts to adapt to the new normal and reach a bigger audience.

The Linggo ng Musikang Pilipino is scheduled to take place from Aug. 19 to 28 and not only does it aim to celebrate Filipino pride and culture but also to educate, enrich and encourage musicians of all backgrounds to share their talent. There will be performances from up and coming artists, amateurs and seasoned veterans from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. Another highlight of the online music festival is an OPM cover contest available to whoever is interested. Workshops and webinars from top figures in the music industry will also be available and the launch of the OPM Archive! The LMP music festival will have a multi format approach with online busking performances available via OPM’s facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/PinoySingers) and workshops are available through the PhilPOP facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/philpopmusic/).
